On March 31, 1889 (Meiji 22 in Japan), the Eiffel Tower, the symbol of Paris, was completed. It is known as a famous landmark in Paris along with the Arc de Triomphe, but it is not marked as the ``low-key Tokyo Tower.'' Up to this point, all the height competitions had been for the steeple of a Christian church, but in 1884 the steeple was built in Washington, D.C. in the United States. The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 as a feature at the 4th World Exposition in Paris. It was designed by the firm of civil engineer Gustave Eiffel, which gave the tower its name.
